He took up judo when he was 5, following his 2 elder brothers who had taken up the sport earlier. He has won numerous titles, the most coveted one being the gold medal at the 2011 World Championship in Paris. At the 2012 London Olympic, he was initially unfairly knocked by a South Korean participant in the quarterfinal but after angry protest by Japanese officials, the result was later reversed.
