A native of Guangzhou, he came into the limelight in Chinese swimming after winning the men's 100m butterfly at the 2001 national games when he was 18. He went on to win two more consecutive gold in the national games. In 2008, he almost went into retirement after failing to be selected to the Beijing Olympics team but with the encouragement from his father and family, he continued to train intensively for this year Asian Games knowing very well that he might be too old to compete in the 2012 Olympics and he wanted to win the gold in Guangzhou, the place he was born.

He competed in his first international competition a year later. In 2007 he won the runnerup title at the World Championship in Canada. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, he won a bronze medal. Earlier this week he took the gold in the same event at the 16th Asian Games.
