He took up judo when he was 5, following his 2 elder brothers who had taken up the sport earlier. He has won numerous titles, the most coveted one being the gold medal at the 2011 World Championship in Paris. At the 2012 London Olympic, he was initially unfairly knocked by a South Korean participant in the quarterfinal but after angry protest by Japanese officials, the result was later reversed. He ended up winning a bronze medal after he was defeated by the eventual gold medalist, a Georgian judoka

He started swimming at age 2, when his mother decided to send him to learn swimming after falling into a pool and almost drowned. His swimming career started at age 12 when he won a bronze medal in a regional competition in Brazil.

His first world title came in 2004 when he won the 200m individual medley at the 2004 World Championship. Since then he has represented Brazil in 3 Olympic Games. He won his first Olympic medal on the first day of the London 2012 Olympics where he was second in the 400m individual medley.

Born in Hangzhou to a sporting family, he was scouted to join training by swimming coaches when he was still in pre-school because he was much taller than all the other boys in his school. His height continues to grow rapidly during his training period. There was one year he grew a full 4cm from 192cm to 196cm. He gained recognition in 2006 after he beat the more prominent swimmer Zhang Lin to win the 1500m freestyle in a national competition. Since then he improved tremendously, slashing almost a minute from his best time in the 1500m freestyle within one year.

At the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou, he took gold in the Men's 4X200 freestyle relay, 1500m freestyle and a silver in 400m freestyle. He also won a bronze in the 1500m freestyle at the 2009 World Championship in Rome, Italy. In July, 2011, he broke the longest standing world record at that time, the 1500m freestyle. On the first day of the swimming competition of the 2012 London Olympics, he swam himself to a gold medal in the 400m freestyle, breaking the Olympic record and coming very close to shatter another world record. He is the first male swimmer from China to win a gold in an Olympic games
