He is from Guangdong province China who started playing badminton at age 6, playing against his father. At age 11, he participated in a competition in Jieyang and emerged champion in both the single and double categories which paved the way for him to be accepted into a main badminton training school in the Guangdong province.

He joined the Guangdong provincial team in 1988 as a singles player until 2002 when he was asked to play in the men's double to represent the province in the national championship because the team lacked of good doubles players. After a few months of intensive training to play the doubles, he together with his partner won the 1st Runnersup in the national championship.

In the same year, China's was defeated in the Thomas Cup and the national team was revamped. Potential players were identified and sent for intensive training. After a few months of training, Fu Haifeng was chosen to join the national team as a doubles player partnering Cai Yun.

His partnership with Cai Yun was a success. In 2004, with the help of the duo, China won the Thomas Cup. Since then the duo was elevated to the first doubles of the Chinese team. In 2006, the Fu Haifeng won the world championship in Madrid Spain, achieving a feat never achieved by China in 17 years and in 2008, he won the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics. Fu added two more World Championship titles to his collection by winning the championship again in 2009 and 2010, making him and his partner as the first duo to win 3 World Championship in the history of the competition. He also won the pretigious All England title twice, in 2005 and 2009. The last two major victories for Fu Haifeng are the Gold Medal in the 2010 Asian Games and Thomas Cup in 2010.
